laundry soap

Cleaning products is the first area I am trying to tackle. As I finish the products I am currently using I plan to replace them with ones that are safe for the environment and healthier for humans. I needed laundry detergent so I checked out the options at my grocery store. I came across Arm & Hammer Essentials Powerful Natural Laundry Detergent. After checking the price (not too much more than my regular detergent) and reading the tag line "Better for my family, better for the environment" I thought I'd give it a try. The label claims that it is made from 100% naturally derived surfactants, is made from biodegradable plant-based soaps, is dye free, contains no phosphates or bleaches, is boosted by baking soda and is safe for septic systems. Sounds good right? But there's also a warning indicating that it contains an irritant. The tiny print on the back states that it may irritate eyes and skin. So what I don't know, because ingredients lists are not required on laundry detergent, is what those irritants are and how dangerous they might be. Nevertheless, this stuff is probably way less harmful than what I was buying before.

I've done several loads of laundry with this stuff and I am impressed. It cleans just as well as my previous brand and the scent is lovely. (Although I don't know how "natural" the scent is.) And the bottle is recyclable.

What I find odd, is that there is no mention of this product on the Arm & Hammer website. You'd think that they would be promoting the product heavily with the environment being such a hot topic.

I too am trying the new Arm and Hammer Essentials detergant. I was looking for a product that would be more compatable with our septic system.

I too tried to find out more about the product through their web site and found no information at all. I have allergies and was wanting to know more about the "scent" issue as to just what was in it.

So far I have had no reaction to the product and will continue to use it until I can come up with a better soultion that might be even more environmentally safe.

I received a sample for another laundry soap when I was at the Green Living Show in Toronto last weekend. I plan to test it out soon and will report back with my review. From the label, it looked to be a better option than the Arm and Hammer. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for the comment!

Have you tried the laundry sample that you got at the Green Living Show? If so how did it work? If it did well let me know the product name ?

finally getting to try it tonight. I'll have a review post up this weekend, promise!

I bought 3 bottles of A & H Essentials at Target when it was on sale and was excited because it was natural and it was inexpensive. While I like it because it cleans super and my clothes come out white and bright, I find that there is a soapy residue on the clothes. Last week, i did a load of towels and I threw a couple in the dryer, but I noticed that they felt really soapy and I could hear it. So, I decided to do a 2nd rinse, and I watched as tons and tons of suds came to the surface. There was so much foam that it looked like I was washing instead of rinsing. I was just so shocked. I hate to do 2 rinses because that makes our water bill go up. I don't even use a lot, I use just a little bit below the line. I also tried some Bio-Kleen detergent that I bought at a natural food store, and while it cost a lot of money, I find that I like that one better. There doesn't seem to be the soapy residue left on the clothes like with Essentials. Both detergents clean equally as well; I'm pleased with both of the detergents' results, but I think I will keep using the Bio-Kleen only because I know for sure that they use ALL natural ingredients, whereas, I suspect A & H still might be using things in it that might not be good for the environment. Personally, I like Essentials scent better, but if it didn't leave such residue, I think it would of been my detergent of choice.

Beth said...

Dot, You may have used too much of the A &H Essential it is really concentrated. I did not have the problem that you described in using the product. Even with regular detergants that I have used in the past I don't use the recommended amounts. Unless the clothes are really dirty and/or oily (which would actually need pre-soaked) you don't usually need the large amount that is recommend of any laundary product. A lot of our wearing apparel is more smelly from wearin it than really dirty.

I have not tried the Bio Kleen I may try it if I can find it in our area.

vivian said...

Beth I think you are right. I also never use the amount of soap that the bottle calls for. I think they over-inflate the amount needed to get us to buy more. I haven't noticed any residue problems with the Arm and Hammer. Do you have a water softener? My parents have a water softener and they don't need to use nearly as much soap as I do.

I'm going to look for the Bio Kleen the next time I'm out shopping. Thanks for the tip Dot!

Beth said...

No we don't have a water softener, but you are right that with one you can reduce the amount of detergant that you use. Water naturally has different levels of calcium and other minerals in it. You have to experiment some what it is like in your area.

My Aunt used to live in a town with a lot of iron in the water. It required more laundry soap that it did in our area. It also required that you used some kind of whitening agent in the lighter clothes as it would leave a reddish residue on clothing. The water treatment plant could not filter out all the mineral compostion in the water.

You just figure things out over the years. If clothes are dirtier you need more cleaning agent and probably presoaked and /or spot cleaned with a soft brush.

(When my youngest son was a little boy, he played baseball and would get green grass stains on white baseball pants. I always had to scrub them on the knees with straight liquid soap and brush it out before actually running them through the wash.)

Lightly soiled clothing or not so much. Nice teddies or undergarments do not require much at all and should be done by hand. A good rule of thumb if it suds too much cut back on the amount you use.

Good luck with what ever you each choose to use. I really think it is progress at least to check out the alternate types of products available in the area you live in and select at least the one with the least effects to the environment. If you live quite a ways from a recource to purchases safer products you have to weight if you will add more toxins to the environment driving long distances to get them. I know some items can be gotten off line and also in some of the smaller markets will order items for you but you might have to order a bulk of it so they would not be stuck with a product that would not sell.

vivian said...

You are so right Beth. There is so much to consider when deciding on which products are right for you. Since I live in the Greater Toronto Area, I have easy access to a lot of environmentally friendly products. I plan to try every think I can get my hands on!

Beth said...

Vivin:

I'll check back now and then and if you come up with a really good product. I'll see if I can find it. It is nice that someone is checking products out. Often the manufacture information is directed toward sales and not the same as when you put it into use.

Thanks, Beth

vivian said...

Thanks Beth. Please keep me posted on products that you try. If I can find them in my area, I will try them as well.

I am experimenting with homemade laundry detergent, using half borax and half washing soda (a small scoop per load) and adding vinegar during the rinse cycle for a fabric softener. So far it seems to be working well. I got the idea from a book called "Green Clean." It's full of good ideas.

Beth said...

Wendy and the rest:
I got a copy of the book you meantioned but I was expecting a little more information to be in the book. A lot of the methods that were written about have been used for years. Just written with a new approach to appeal to younger people just starting to get interesed in more a more natural approach to things.I'm sure you found out a lot of information that you were unaware of and it will be useful to you in making changes to your life.

The combination that you meantioned I've heard, read about, and have used before but the borax and washing soda blend is usually used as an additive to enhance some other soap base.

This part is a tidbit from the past: Years ago my grandmother and one of my aunts used these to enhance the way that homemade Lye soap whitened and brightened white clothes. It will also work with modern soaps to enhance their proformance and also cut down on the amount you use.

We should be glad of at least some of the improvements to doing the laundry.

My Grandmother actually boiled her clothing out the back door of her country home half way between the house and the well, in one of those huge cast iron pots. I saw her doing it once when I was a very little girl in about 1957. We should all thank our lucky stars that we do not have to make the soap (which means rendering hog or beef fat and mixing it with lye and water and letting it set long enough to harden and then re-grating it so it will disolve) , pack the water from the well to the pot , heat the water in the pot (over an open fire in the yard) , scrub the clothes on the wash board, and then hang them out on the line (I still do this if the weather is nice). Then when the were dry you had to take them down sprinkle them before ironing them with water and cover them with a towel , also any think that you wanted a crisp finish to( like a dress shirt) had to be hand starched , then iron them with a flat iron heated on the back of the wood stove in the kitchen that had been tested with a dampened finger to make sure it was not too hot to scorch the clothes. Everything had to be ironed, including the bedding because there was no perma-press or blended fabrics. When the pot cooled out side it had to be dumped air dried and turned upside down so it would not fill up with water and either rust out if it was warm weather or freeze and break if it was cold weather. This procedure was done year around in most rural areas for a very long time because of no electrical service.

The amount of work involved was tremendous and if you never saw it done or helped with the process you can not even understand it at all. When my grandmother moved into a small town in 1961. It was the first time in her life she was in a house with electrical service.

This will probably be my last time where I leave a message. I've come to realize you are are just beginning to see the possibities and because of the the time frame that I lived it and staying most of the time with my grandmother,I have been there and done that, Her lifes style on the farm was as basic and natural as it could get . Because of nature of the time and place that she lived and also because of the of their economic scale. I thank you all for allowing me a moment of voice, I thank you for your concerns about the earth, and how you are each trying to value it, and I look forward to a better earth because people like you , and my neices, are trying in what every small way they can to preserve , and care for the world around them.

I bid you all peace and and enjoy the journey along the way,

vivian said...

Wendy, thanks so much for the recipe. I am eager to try it out and check out the book.

Beth, thank you for your insight. Do you have a blog? If not, you should. I think you have a lot of wisdom to share with the rest of us.

It is so encouraging to hear from others who are trying to make a positive environmental impact. Best wishes to all of you.

Beth said...

Vivian:
I just thought of this, this afternoon: The recipe that Wendy gave you will probably work better if you fill the washer and let the washer run a little bit to disolve the borax and the washing soda. It might effect the coloring of the clothing if you don't.

We LOVE the Arm and HAmmer Essentials laundry detergent.

Environmentally friendly. Smells good. But it is sudsy so don't overuse it.

We believe that's it's bing test marketed so that's why it's not everywhere.

Wow - I'm very happy that I found all the info. that I did on your blog. I went to Target to try and find the GREEN arm and hammer and found nothing. I did however find some coupons on the arm and hammer website for $1.00 off. Check it out! Maybe someone can let me know what Target they went to and if they are selling any in Canada yet? I currently use Shaklee, such wonderful products, although I want to see if there are products that claim to do the same, while safe on the environment & chemical free (eeewwwweee...Formaldehyde) but cheaper on the wallet. Can anyone let me know? Thanks!

APPARENTLY IT DOES CONTAIN OPTICAL BRIGHTNERS BUT IT IS NOT LISTED ON THE LABEL!!!!!!!!!!!!

vivian said...

That sucks! Anonymous, can you tell me where you found that information? I'd love to know the source if you can divulge it. Thanks.

Anonymous said...

If you call them they admit to optical brighteners that bond irreversibly to skin and are environmental pollutants. Call them and tell them to take it out of the recipe please.

polly said...

this sounds like a wonderful product, however, arm & hammer has been listed by PETA of testing on animals. i care about the environment, but i also care about animals.

Cheryl C McNeil said...

Yes they will tell you that it contains optical brighteners if you call them.

If they were truly interested in the environment instead of cashing in on the green movement they would have this listed on their package.

The essentials glass cleaner has a warning label that consists of calling poison control which to me does not say it is healthy for the family or the environment.

I have been concerned and doing all I can for the environment since the late 1960's and research everything that comes out claiming to be green, it is so much easier now that we have the internet.

Using green products is great, just make sure they are truly green and not just cashing in on the green movement.

It is great that companies are going green but when it is at the cost of the consumer and the environment with false statements, shame on them.

I use products from a company that was the first in the world to be certified climate neutral, have products which are green seal certified and play a major role in leading the way for other companies to truly be green.

Do your due diligence and if there is something in the product you think is not right, don't use it.

The thing about Arm & Hammer Essentials Laundry Detergent, Purex Natural Elements, Mrs. Meyers, Seventh Generation, Ecover and all the other so called natural laundry detergents with their "coconut or naturally derived cleaning agents" is, they all contain either Sodium Laureth Sulfate or Sodium Laurel Sulfate. This is the same ingredient in most of our shampoos, body washes and even toothpaste, and it's a known carcinagen. (sp? cancer causing agent)

It's a harmful chemical if swallowed, and it absorbs into your skin just as much if not more than if you swallowed it. This is why those of us in the know are turning to the homemade laundry soaps.

The ultimate recipe for making homemade laundry soap is to use old fashioned lye soap or natural equivalent with washing soda and borax while using vinegar as a fabric softener. There are many different recipes on the web you can follow to make this stuff, for powdered or liquid laundry soap just like our grandmothers used to make.

Having used this stuff myself, I find it fun to make and works pretty darn good. It's even ok for HE front loaders because it doesn't sud. In fact, finding ways to spend less money on making cleaning, laundry and beauty products that are healthy for me and the environment is almost a game for me anymore.

As for the detergent, I keep a bottle of this kind of stuff on hand just in case I run out of the homemade or for a finicky guest that needs something washed, but I figure it's the lesser of the two evils, a petro-chemical traditional detergent or the more environmentally safe plant based alternative.

Now that you know the stuff contains not only chemical optical brighteners but another dangerous chemical too, you can make your own informed choices. I've already made mine.

I am REALLY new at this, and trying to find a laundry soap I trust and believe in. I've tried a lot, and haven't been overly impressed. The Arm & Hammer laundry soap says on the bottle that it contains no sulfates. I have been trying to avoid the Sodium Lauryl Sulfates especially, and anything containing soy.

I've considered making my own laundry soap, and would prefer to actually. I have two issues with this. First, I can't find washing soda anywhere. Also, the only recipes I can find require bar soap, usually ivory, which contains the sulfates.

I have a health issue requiring me to avoid the sulfates and soy (there's a LOT of laundry soap that has soy ingredients!) and I feel so stuck. Any suggestions? Last night I got so fed up and had to wash pillowcases, and washed it with vinegar and Borax. They came out clean, but I highy doubt that's a super great way to wash all my laundry. Any help ould be SO appreciated.
